Zerno Rewind: The Z1 Earns Praise From New York Magazine

"The best truly(and nearly) plastic-free electric coffee grinder."
That's how The Strategist at New York Magazine described the Zerno Z1 in its recent breakdown of plastic-free coffee equipment— a distinction that speaks directly to how and why we build.

The article highlights a reality many coffee drinkers don’t realize until they look closely: Even premium equipment often relies on plastic components where beans, grounds, or hot water make contact. For those trying to minimize plastic in their coffee workflow, that matters.
Why Materials Matter
Plastic is often used for convenience and cost, but it comes with tradeoffs. As The Strategist notes, truly plastic-free setups tend to favor stainless steel, aluminum, and glass — materials chosen for durability, thermal stability, and long service life.
The Zerno Approach
Manufacturing a complex electric grinder with zero plastic-derived materials is, in practice, nearly impossible. Our goal with the Zerno Z1 was to minimize plastic wherever functionally and responsibly possible — especially anywhere beans or grounds come into contact.
The Z1 is plastic-free from hopper to chute, built instead from premium stainless steel and aircraft-grade aluminum. The limited plastic-derived materials that remain are confined to non-contact, non-structural elements such as internal wiring sheaths, the funnel O-ring, and foam pads used to protect the grinder base. This approach allows us to balance material integrity, safety, and long-term durability without compromising performance.
That commitment is why the Z1 earned recognition as the best truly plastic-free electric coffee grinder. For us, sustainability isn’t about absolutes — it’s about reducing waste and building equipment meant to be serviced, refined, and used for decades.
Thoughtful Gear, Better Coffee
For us, sustainability is about reducing waste and building equipment that withstands the test of time. Choosing tools built with care, longevity, and transparency in mind is a meaningful step toward better coffee.
